Unlike a lot of other equestrian and jousting re-enactment groups overseas, we also allow both men and women to fully participate in all of our activities.
Members can join the Order of the Boar as either dedicated foot crew or as riders.
Foot Crew are the unsung heroes of any jousting group as they are the people who help prepare the horses, set the display the display area and who run the display area during a show. On top of all that they also have to assist the riders by helping them put on armour and handing them various items of equipment such as their lances when required.
 Foot Crew are also thoroughly trained in basic horse handling and grooming skills as well as in the multitude of tasks required to help us train safely and run a display.
Riders are all required to act as foot crew when required so are also well versed in foot crew skills. Before a member can join as a rider they first must know how to ride a horse competently. We do not provide instruction in this so if a prospective rider can t ride, it is up to him or her to arrange for their own training through a professional riding school. It also helps them to have their own horse but there is some opportunity to ride other member s horses as non-owner Riders.
 Riders are first taught to ride with only one hand held loosely on the reins. This allows the other hand to be free to handle weapons. Riders are first taught safe weapon handing skills with the sword, spear and jousting lance through a number of Skill-at-Arms exercises. Skill-at-Arms is a specialist activity in its own right that requires a greater level of riding skill than actual jousting.
Once a rider has developed competency in skill-at-arms they may progress to Mounted Melee training and Jousting if they want to. Jousting requires a greater degree of lance skill than the Skill-at-Arms so joust training initially consists of further developing one s lance handing skills. While this is happening, the rider is also obtaining his or her own jousting armour.
The rider then starts training with their armour on as this creates a new set of problems including weight distribution. Most armour is top heavy so this upsets the rider s balance. It can takes a long time to develop the skill to feel comfortable ad ride safely in armour, particularly when wearing a fully enclosed jousting helmet that restricts vision and distorts depth perception.
 The rider then progresses to single hit jousting where they learn to either take a hit from another rider with a lance or to give a hit against an armed rider. This helps develop the lance control and split second timing required to deliver a hit safely and accurately. Once the rider has learnt how to take and give a hit, he or she then moves on to actual jousting where both riders are trying to hit each other.
Jousters first hone their skills in public displays with other club members before being allowed to take part in the high pressure conditions of a real competition between themselves and other jousters from elsewhere.
Order of the Boar members may also learn other medieval fighting skills such as sword and buckler combat on foot and also long sword combat on foot.
The Order of the Boar trains once a week on Saturday afternoons at Kaitoke just north of Upper Hutt. We also hold training weekends when required for other people from throughout New Zealand who cannot otherwise attend our regular weekly training sessions.
Because of our rigorous approach to both horse safely and training, we are widely acknowledged around the world at being the best in the business at what we do.
In recent years our activities have moved into other periods of history that present their own new set of challenges and skills to master. These skills include formation riding, period military horse drills, firing rifles from horse back to name but a few. We expect these and other skills to be developed further in the years ahead

Chivalric Training

All Content Copyright © Site by IronHorse

 var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ?
