The wheel lock pistols used by the Reivers are especially very hard to come by, and must be custom made generally by European gunsmiths. These photos were taken prior to their delivery to New Zealand in May 2010. "><img src="images/border1_t.png"></a> <a href="images/border2.png" rel="lightbox[AAK1]" title="A close up of the pistols. These are fully functional replicas of a original weapon dated 1587. Such weapons were common among the more wealthy border reivers who also called such weapons  dags . "><img src="images/border2_t.png"></a> <a href="images/border3.png" rel="lightbox[AAK1]" title="This is the original wheel-lock puffer that the two pistols are a copy of (minus the decorations). The original pistol was made for the Trabanten-Leibgarde (Guard) of the Saxon Elector Christian I, the barrel dated 1587. At some stage the replicas may be up-graded with such decoration but this is currently beyond or budget! This has also been ordered and we expect to receive it in mid 2010. "><img src="images/border4_t.png"></a> <a href="images/border5.png" rel="lightbox[AAK1]" title="Reloading was quite a complicated affair and often it would not have been practical to reload the weapons from scratch in the field. Instead reloads were often pre-prepared in the form of cartridges. These were a charge of powder and shot wrapped in paper  similar to later centuries. These cartridges were carried in ornate cartridge boxes such as this example here. This will also be ordered - hopefully in late 2010.
